A Sunny Day In New Orleans

Hi all,

I just wanted to share my latest song with you all. This song is yet un-recorded due to awaiting studio upgrades, but hopefully it will make its live debut soon. Just to let you know, this song is separate from my Lester Moore project.

I was walking along the streets of Mt Barker the other day enjoying the wonderful Summer sunshine when all of a sudden, I started hearing trombones in my head. It sounded pretty cool. It sort of reminded me of a New Orleans Jazz Funeral. I quickly grabbed a pen and paper and started to write down all the lyrics that came flooding in to go with these trombones. It was quite and experience as even the melody came flooding in! By the end of it, I was quite chuffed with it all.

Then, later on today, I sat down with the twelve string guitar and worked out the chords for it, that went well with the melody I had. I plugged in, gave it a whirl and Tikarma gave me the thumbs up! So…now I have a new song. I can’t wait to record this one as it will have a nice four part harmony for the chorus and a trombone and trumpet solo. But…that will have to wait.

So, here are the lyrics for A Sunny Day In New Orleans. If you want to check out the chords, just go to the Chords/Lyrics section at www.jamiemcpherson.com.au

So, ladies and gentlemen….I present…A Sunny Day In New Orleans –

A Sunny Day In New Orleans

Chorus

I’m just a funeral procession, processing

I’m just a professional confessional, professing

Lazy ways in the

Summer haze

What a way to

End my days

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

I’ve moved on up from the

Second line

I may be dead but it’s a

Hell of a time

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

Chorus

The band’s in front followed

By my crew

And then some folks that I

Hardly knew

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

They’re carrying me out with my

Feet first

No need to worry about a

Big black hearse

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

Chorus

It’s awfully hot in this

New Orleans heat

Travelin’ this style just

Can’t be beat

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

They called up dead Slim on the

Slide trombone

To play some swing to

Bring me back home

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

Chorus

This casket’s nice, it is

Velvet lined

A good bed is

So hard to find

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

The road’s been long but the

Party’s been good

See all the folks come out from the

Neighbourhood

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

Chorus

When they get to the grave and they

Cut me loose

This band’s gonna swing just like a

Hangman’s noose

Kickin’ back just listening

To the band

I’m in the ground but the

Band plays on

It’s my party and I’m the

First one gone

Kickin’ back just thinking about

The band

Yes, just kickin’ back

And thinkin’ about my band

  1. I love the way the creative process works, particularly when something like this arrives seemingly out of the blue 🙂

There is a terrific rhythm in the lyrics – I could feel it as I read the words.

I am really looking forward to hearing it when you get that far.

My very best to you my friend

    David

    • Hi David,

Thank you very much for your wonderful blog comment. You just made my day 🙂

The creative process is a strange one as it comes in many forms and is inspired by many things. Sometimes it is something we see, or something we or others do or say. Sometimes it is something you hear. This one was very strange as it came out of nowhere. Just trombones popping in my head for no apparent reason reason. Maybe just because it was a glorious sunny day 🙂

I’m glad you liked the rhythm of the the lyrics. I suppoese it helped that the melody of the song was already in my head and the lyrics were written around that.

I’m very much looking forward to sharing it with you when it is finaly recorded.

Take care my dear friend and have a wonderful week.

      Beannachd leat,

      Jamie

    Hi Jamie,

    Congratualtions on your new song!
I’m so very happy for you that have been able to add another to your collection. 🙂
I quite like this song and it was good to be able to hear you play the basic structure of how you envision the song to go.
It should make a good song live. 🙂
I’m very much looking forward to being able to hear the whole composition come together once we’re upgraded in the studio. It will be an exciitng time I think finally being able to realise the full vision of your songs. 🙂

There is certainly a catchy rhythm in this song. The rhyme you’ve created leaves the words lingering in your head after and I can certainly hear a Tuba somewhere in the background. 🙂
There’s a distinct visual to this as well. I could imagine the scene of the band and the funeral procession very vividly.

Again. Congratualtions! I’m extrememly proud of you, especially for pushing on despite the obstacles in your way at the moment.

Yours always in love and much spousal pride

    • Awwww…..thank you Tikarma. It is a great feeling to have another song in the repertoire. Especially one I enjoyed writing and love the outcome of 🙂

I’m glad you like it. It is always good to please my second harshest critic 🙂 I do appreciate all your feedback and help keeping me on track 🙂 It was great to be able to share the creative process with you and know that you have a genuine interest and show me great support and encouragement. I can ramble about the recording process and be confident that you won’t roll your eyes 🙂

I think this will go do well live with just the 12 string. But I am looking forward to being able to arrange it and record it once the studio upgrades are done. I’m glad you can hear the tuba as that is my planned bass line. And then some trumpet and trombone solos. And being a New Orleans inspired song, as Dr John sang “A big bass drum on a street parade…” 🙂

I’m glad you like the rhythm of it. It does help that the song was written around the music in my head. And I’m very glad you could find a visual element too, as that is what was playing in my minds eye as I was writing it. I always play a little visual movie in my head as I tell a story with my lyrics. I think visualisation is the key to writing, something you do so well 🙂

Thank you Tikarma. I’m very proud of you too 🙂 One must always push on. Will have that studio going again one day 🙂

With all the love in my heart and thanks in my soul,

      Jamie
